Submission Readiness Checklist for Combinatorial Press Journals

Ensuring a smooth and successful submission process is essential. Before submitting your manuscript, consider the following checklist:

  1.  Review Author Guidelines: Familiarize yourself with the specific guidelines for Combinatorial Press journals, accessible through this link. Thoroughly review these guidelines to align your manuscript with the specified requirements.
  2. Review Limits on Manuscripts Under Review: Authors are restricted to having a maximum of three manuscripts under review within a single journal and six across all Combinatorial Press journals simultaneously. If you already have three manuscripts under review in a particular journal, kindly wait until the review process for at least one is complete before submitting another.
  3. Publication Limits: Authors are limited to a total of five published articles within a single journal and eight across all Combinatorial Press journals per calendar year. Exceptions may be considered, subject to the discretion of the journal. Note that this policy excludes editorials and other non-peer-reviewed manuscript types.
  4. Prepare Necessary Files: Format your manuscript as a PDF (.pdf) document before submission, ensuring figures and tables are included within the file. If your manuscript is accepted, be prepared to provide the original editable files.
  5. Accessibility of Figures: Prioritize accessibility for all readers, including those with visual impairments, when creating figures. Use black and white, greyscale, or a monochromatic color scale. If colors are necessary, opt for contrasting combinations such as green/magenta, yellow/blue, or red/cyan. Utilize tools like Photoshop, ImageJ, or Color Oracle to proof figures in “color blind mode.
  6. Coauthors’ Details: Collect and provide the complete details of all coauthors at the time of submission. This includes their full names, institutional email addresses, affiliations, and countries. Ensure email addresses are institutional, previously used in publications, or available on the authors’ institutional websites.
  7. ORCID Registration: If you already possess an ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID), please provide it during submission. For those without an ORCID, the submission process will guide you in creating a new ID.
  8. Letter to the Editor Submission: Combinatorial Press welcomes submissions of “Letters to the Editor” across all journals. These letters should provide substantive commentary on a previously published article within the same journal. An Editorial Board Member will assess all Letters to the Editor, and peer review is optional at the discretion of the handling editor. Note that general commentary or opinion pieces will not be considered for this type of submission. To submit a “Letter to the Editor,” kindly email your article directly to the managing editor of the respective journal.

Optimizing Your Journal Selection for Research Publication

Choosing the appropriate journal significantly influences the success of your manuscript submission. To ensure the best fit, carefully assess the following aspects when considering a Combinatorial Press journal for your research:

  1. Journal Focus: Determine if the journal covers a broad spectrum of topics or has a specific focus. Subject-specific journals prioritize relevant manuscripts, making them ideal for targeted submissions. For interdisciplinary or cross-topic articles, opt for journals with broader scopes. Reviewing the aims and scopes on the journal websites provides clarity on the type of research considered.
  2. Journal Content: Examine the content previously published by the journal. Ask yourself if your article aligns with the existing publications and if they are articles you would have encountered during your research. Investigate if the journal publishes Special Issues relevant to your field, as these curated collections offer insights into the journal’s content.
  3. Journal Metrics: Understand the timeframes involved in the publication process, from submission to final decision and acceptance to publication. Knowledge of the acceptance rate provides insights into the likelihood of your article being accepted. Combinatorial Press journals present this information transparently on their websites, enabling informed decisions about publication timelines.
  4. Journal CiteScore: Assess the impact of the journal, considering both journals with and without a CiteScore. While the CiteScore is valuable, journals without it may cater to specific readerships or practitioner-focused audiences. Evaluate readership as another indicator of impact, recognizing that relevance to specific disciplines can be equally significant.
  5. Discoverability: Evaluate the accessibility of your articles to the intended readership. Check if the journal is indexed in major databases like Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed, enhancing discoverability. Journals with robust indexing are likely to garner more downloads and citations, contributing to the broader impact of your research.
